Carbon Storage & Climate

Screening, monitoring design and technical evaluation for CO2 storage, stated with the uncertainty a regulator or investor needs to see.

01 / The problem

A carbon dioxide (CO2) storage project has to show three things: that there is enough pore space (capacity), that CO2 can be injected at the planned rate (injectivity), and that it will stay where it is put (containment). Each depends on subsurface properties that are known only within a range, and regulators, lenders and credit buyers all need to see that range.

02 / Approach

How the work is done.

  1. Screen

Existing well, core and survey data are reviewed against exclusion criteria to decide whether a site merits further work.
  2. Characterize

The storage interval and the caprock above it are described from logs, core and tests: thickness, porosity, permeability and continuity.
  3. Estimate capacity

Inputs are given as ranges and combined probabilistically, so capacity is reported as P90, P50 and P10 cases with the main drivers of the spread.
  4. Assess containment

Caprock integrity, faults and existing wells are examined as possible leakage pathways.
  5. Design monitoring

A monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) plan is built around the predicted response and the largest uncertainties.
  6. Report

Findings, assumptions, limitations and recommended next measurements are set out for technical and non-technical readers.

03 / CO2 storage screening

CO2 storage screening

Screening is a desk study that uses what already exists. Its purpose is to stop weak sites early and to say what the next measurement should be.

  1. Depth, thickness and extent of the candidate storage interval.
  2. Presence, thickness and continuity of a low-permeability caprock.
  3. Porosity and permeability from logs, core or analogues, stated as ranges.
  4. Faults, fractures and existing wells that could compromise containment.
  5. In basalt

The vesicular and fractured intervals that provide storage and reactive surface, and the massive flows that confine them.

04 / MRV and monitoring strategy

MRV and monitoring strategy

A monitoring method earns its place only if it can detect the predicted change at this site. The plan sets out what is measured, how often, and what result would trigger a response.

  1. Baseline measurements before injection, since they cannot be acquired afterwards.
  2. Methods matched to the predicted pressure, saturation and geochemical response.
  3. Detection thresholds and the actions that follow if they are crossed.

05 / Carbon-credit technical evaluation

Carbon-credit technical evaluation

An independent review of the subsurface claims behind a carbon-credit project: how much is stored, how permanently, and how that is being monitored. The review states what the evidence supports and what it does not [VERIFY: methodologies or registries worked with].

06 / CCU assessment

CCU assessment

Technical screening of carbon capture and utilization (CCU) options where CO2 is used rather than, or as well as, stored [VERIFY: scope of CCU work offered].

07 / Deliverables

What you receive.

Each engagement ends with documents and data that can be filed, checked and reused.

  • A site screening report with a ranked risk register
  • Capacity estimates as P90, P50 and P10 cases, with input ranges and sensitivities
  • A containment assessment covering caprock, faults and existing wells
  • An MRV plan: methods, frequency, baselines and thresholds
  • A technical evaluation report for carbon-credit projects
  • Model inputs and results in open formats [VERIFY: formats]

09 / Sample figure

What the evidence looks like.

An illustrative figure built from synthetic data, to show the form of the output. It is not from a client project.
Fig. 1 Illustrative cross-section: a borehole through a claystone caprock into a vesicular basalt storage-target interval. Source: Schematic; generic formations, not to scale, not a real site.
Fig. 2 Illustrative example. Cumulative CO2 stored by case; P90 is the low case and P10 the high case [VERIFY: convention]. Source: Illustrative values, not project data.

In practice.

Case studies are published only with the client's agreement. Entries marked as placeholders show the structure, not a real project [VERIFY].

Placeholder case study. Screening of a basalt formation for CO2 storage using logged rock properties, a fluid-response framework and a monitoring sensitivity study.

11 / Questions

Common questions.

How much data is needed for a screening study?

Screening uses whatever exists. Sparse data gives a wide range rather than no answer, and the report says which measurement would narrow it most.

What do P90, P50 and P10 mean here?

P90 is the low case, with a 90% probability of being exceeded; P50 is the mid case; P10 is the high case. Reports state the convention used [VERIFY: convention].

Do you verify or issue carbon credits?

No. DeepSink provides the technical evaluation that a project developer, buyer or verifier can rely on; it does not issue or certify credits [VERIFY].

Can you work on basalt storage specifically?

Yes. Basalt screening looks at the vesicular and fractured intervals, the confining flows between them and the water chemistry that controls mineralization [VERIFY: experience to cite].

12 / Other services

01

Borehole Logging & Interpretation

Wireline logging, petrophysics and core-log integration that turn a borehole into a calibrated record of the formations it crosses.

03

Subsurface Resources

Resource evaluation for groundwater, basalt and geothermal wells, built on logged and tested data rather than surface inference alone.

05

Training & Curriculum Development
