Subsurface Resources

Resource evaluation for groundwater, basalt and geothermal wells, built on logged and tested data rather than surface inference alone.

01 / The problem

Groundwater, basalt and geothermal projects are often planned from surface mapping and a handful of old well records. The decisions that follow (where to drill, how much can be abstracted, whether a formation will take or yield fluid) depend on properties that only a borehole measures.

02 / Approach

How the work is done.

  1. Review

Existing boreholes, well records, pumping tests and maps are collated and checked for quality.
  2. Log and test

New or existing boreholes are logged, and the logs tied to core, cuttings and hydraulic tests.
  3. Evaluate

Productive or receptive intervals are identified with their thickness, properties and continuity between wells.
  4. Recommend

Results are turned into resource estimates, well designs or monitoring networks, with the uncertainty stated.

03 / Groundwater

Groundwater

Logging identifies aquifer intervals, their thickness and the quality of the water in them, which driller descriptions alone rarely resolve.

  1. Aquifer and aquitard boundaries from gamma ray and resistivity.
  2. Inflow zones from temperature, fluid conductivity and flowmeter logs.
  3. Water-quality changes with depth from fluid conductivity.
  4. Design input for screens, monitoring boreholes and monitoring networks.

04 / Basalt

Basalt

Basalt sequences alternate between massive flow interiors and vesicular or fractured flow tops. Telling them apart is what matters for water supply, for CO2 storage and for use as a material.

  1. Flow boundaries and interflow zones from density, resistivity and image logs.
  2. Fracture intensity and orientation from borehole imaging.
  3. Physical, hydraulic and geochemical properties relevant to the intended use.

05 / Geothermal well evaluation

Geothermal well evaluation

A geothermal well is judged on temperature, permeability and the zones that feed it.

  1. Temperature profiles and geothermal gradient.
  2. Feed zones from temperature, flow and image logs.
  3. Formation properties for reservoir and well-integrity assessment [VERIFY: temperature rating of tools available].

06 / Deliverables

What you receive.

Each engagement ends with documents and data that can be filed, checked and reused.

  • A resource evaluation report with stated uncertainty
  • Composite logs with aquifer, flow or feed-zone picks
  • Correlation between boreholes, where more than one is logged
  • Recommendations for well completion, monitoring or further testing
  • Logs and interpreted data in open formats [VERIFY: formats]

07 / Tools and data

Tools, software and data used
Category What is used
Borehole logging Gamma ray, resistivity, caliper, temperature, fluid conductivity, flowmeter and imaging; see Borehole Logging & Interpretation
Hydraulic testing Analysis of pumping, injection and recovery test data supplied by the client or contractor [VERIFY: whether testing is carried out directly]
Interpretation software Log interpretation and correlation software [VERIFY: packages used]
Data Existing borehole records, water-quality analyses, geological maps and geophysical surveys

Source: Tool types and software categories only. Named products are added once confirmed by the owner.

08 / Sample figure

What the evidence looks like.

An illustrative figure built from synthetic data, to show the form of the output. It is not from a client project.
Fig. 1 Illustrative well-log panel. Gamma ray separates claystone from sandstone and basalt; resistivity and sonic respond to porosity and fluid. Intervals are picked where the curves change together. Source: Synthetic data generated for illustration; not a client well.

09 / Related case study

In practice.

Case studies are published only with the client's agreement. Entries marked as placeholders show the structure, not a real project [VERIFY].

10 / Questions

Common questions.

Can old boreholes with no records be assessed?

Usually. A logging run in an existing borehole recovers depth, construction and aquifer information that was never recorded, provided the hole is accessible.

Is this a replacement for a pumping test?

No. Logs show where water enters and what the formation is; a pumping test shows how much it yields over time. They answer different questions and are stronger together.

Do you work in high-temperature geothermal wells?

That depends on tool temperature ratings [VERIFY: maximum temperature and depth].

11 / Other services

01

Borehole Logging & Interpretation

Wireline logging, petrophysics and core-log integration that turn a borehole into a calibrated record of the formations it crosses.

02

Carbon Storage & Climate

Screening, monitoring design and technical evaluation for CO2 storage, stated with the uncertainty a regulator or investor needs to see.

05

Training & Curriculum Development

Courses and curricula in borehole logging, interpretation and carbon storage, built so that agency, industry and university teams can do the work themselves.
